My 2009 in a nutshell...or rather, a blog post

It would be very hard to properly recap this entire year.....at least for me. My husband claims that I am long-winded (whatever! I totally can keep my conversations to a minimum if I need to. I mean once in awhile I get on a tangent and kind of talk more than I should but honestly, doesn't everyone? For real, we all talk more.....oh, wait.) I am also the type of person who likes everyone around me to understand exactly what I am trying to say. That translates into too much detail....lol.

So--I will just recap our year with pictures (and maybe a short description ;-)....I can't help myself. We have had a good year, full of learning and growing. God has taken care of us in ways we did not expect. And now we have another year to look forward to, knowing that He will guide us through the whole thing! Happy 2010!

January--Ellie got a fish (Splash). It did not survive the year...RIP.

February: Elise got 3rd place in her Kindergarten spelling bee!

March: We traveled to Oregon to meet my new niece, and got to take the kids to the Oregon Coast. Elijah also turned 2!

April: Eliana turned 5 and had a big party :-)

May: Elise graduated from Kindergarten

June: Josh's youngest sister got married....we were all in the wedding.

July: We went on a mini family vacation to CO Springs--very fun!

August: I made a quick trip to Idaho, with the kids, to see my grandparents and stay with my parents.

September: We decided to homeschool the girls this year.

October: The kids went to lots of fun fall festivities--Elijah liked the fire station.

November: We got a huge snowstorm, and traveled out to Wisconsin for Thanksgiving.

December: Elise turned 7 this month, and we enjoyed spending time together during the Christmas season.

To blog or not to blog....that is the question!

I have become one of those blogs that I hate to visit. You know--the ones that only post every two weeks, and those posts are usually boooooorrrrring. :-)

I promise to try harder. I really do.

I promise to lie awake at night, pondering new topics to write about.

I promise to scour websites, finding fabulous deals and informative tidbits for you to read.

I promise to take every opportunity I have for photo ops, so that you can see my life documented in pictures.

And I promise to read all of your blogs often--to keep current with your happenings--so that I sound extremely knowledgeable and "with it".

But to give some kind of excuse in the meantime.......
this has been ONE OF THOSE WEEKS.

~~~~The oldest E decided that she is freaked out by fire alarms and all things pertaining to them. So she spent two nights of little sleep. Coming into our room at random times, asking to sleep with us in case there was a fire. (Or just crawling into bed when she realized that I was dead to the world and would not really notice and try to send her back to her own bed.)
After she realized that we are slightly unsympathetic parents......we did try to neutralize her fears, but there came a point that we just told her to get over it. In a very loving gentle tone, of course.......She then began telling me every night as I tucked her in: "I hope that someday we will move to a house with only one bedroom, so that we can all sleep together." Or better yet, "Mommy, wouldn't it be great if we all slept in the same room!" Hmmm.
I tried to break it to her as nicely as possible that Mommy did not find that concept appealing in any way.
~~~~Our middle E is going through a rebellious stage, and we never know what will set her off. Perhaps she is practicing for PMS. We are not sure. Anyways, she informed us last Wed. night that she felt she needed to "take a break from Cubbies this week".
I totally understand.....I mean, I am sure Cubbies does get a little demanding. The one verse a week to memorize, the games, the craft time, the take-home treat every week. Everyone needs to step back once in awhile. (especially when you get in trouble for trying to accost the teachers. But that is for another post.)

~~~~The littlest E (and the most destructive of them all) has led a full week as well. Between throwing some shiny Christmas balls off the kitchen table (they made such a NEAT sound) and taking all of the plastic lids out of one of the cupboards (and trying them on his head) and turning off the hot water heater once again, he also found the time to tell us that he wanted to use the potty and then ACTUALLY WENT!!!
So, in amongst all of the devilish acts, there must be something right going on in his toddler mind. (We can hope at least....)
So now---our week is halfway done, and I am finally feeling slightly back on track. I will try to get back to my regularly scheduled posting and not be "one of those blogs".
Do you all forgive me? (Or are you just laughing at me and my family's antics?)
I do so like them, Sam-I-Am!
On any given day, if you were to stop by my house, you might wonder if I like my kids. Not that I am ever yelling or impatient.....you just might wonder for whatever reason or another.......
Not wonder if I LOVE them. Of course I love my own flesh and blood! I am talking about liking them, as you would a good friend. Some days, it is extremely hard to LIKE these little people.....
*Hard to like them while they are stealing toys from each other.
*Hard to like them when the girls are bickering like jealous 13 yr. olds.
*Hard to like them when the baby is screaming (again) for no apparent reason.
*Hard to like them when all of the toys--and I do mean ALL--are covering the basement.
*Hard to like them when they are randomly pushing buttons on the computer while I am typing.
(as is happening right now......precious sweeties.)
I know that I am called to be a mother to these three, and that the Fruits of the Spirit need to govern my every mothering action. It's just that they usually don't. I will admit that to all of you. (Because I cannot see you.) Isn't it always easier that way?
But I am thankful for the 3 precious lives that God has given me to care for. They are fun and interesting and endearing at times. And I need to remind myself of that often.
That is the reason for today's "Friday Fives".....you are all witness to my confession:
I LIKE MY KIDS! :-)
And here are some reasons why......
1) Biggest E asked Jesus to be her Savior and Lord two weeks ago! It was a sweet, precious time, talking her through the salvation experience. And we can see the change in her attitude--which is a huge blessing, if you know her at all! She doesn't argue as much, and is so helpful with her brother.
2) Littlest E learned to kiss now. He puckers up and everything.....your heart just melts.
3) Middle E has taught herself to write. She works on all sorts of letters by herself. (Perhaps she will teach herself to read too......one can hope.) She also makes up songs about Jesus and sings them to herself in the back of the van.
4) Littlest E knows how to say the girls' names now, and yells them every morning when he wakes up. :-)
5) They all love to wrestle with Daddy, and work together to attack him every evening before bed. (After attacking Mommy all day, in various ways......it is Daddy's turn for sure.)
(See, I told you I like them! And now you can all remind me of that when I am pulling my hair out or have lost my voice from yelling......)
A haven of ....... something
I have really been trying to make our house into a peaceful solace....a fortress from the cares of the world.
But how can a mother create such a place when she is surrounded by these sorts of things?
Gangsters? Come on.....
Tough guys, pushing people around...?
Crazy people, fooling around constantly....?
And the rodents! They are taking over the house!
(Do you see why I have my job cut out for me???)
